My Recommended Mouth Care System – Dr. Ellie’s Mouth Care System Guide
A “mouth care system” is a concept I was introduced to by Dr. Ellie, and it’s absolutely brilliant. It’s the system for mouth care I recommend to anyone and everyone. It’s certainly revolutionary AND it works!
Dr. Ellie’s Complete Mouth Care System is a scientifically developed approach to achieving and maintaining optimal oral health.
Dr. Ellie Phillips is a dentist with over 40 years of experience. She’s helped thousands of people prevent cavities, resolve gum disease, and achieve a cleaner, healthier mouth.
What she calls ‘The Complete Mouth Care System’ consists of using specific oral care products in a precise sequence, twice per day – in the morning and evening before bed. The products she recommends (which are very easy to get) work synergistically to get rid of mouth bacteria, balance the mouth’s pH, and clean and strengthen teeth.
Here are the step-by-step instructions for Dr. Ellie’s Complete Mouth Care System:
(I’ve also linked the products on Amazon because the products are specific)
- Rinse: Vigorously rinse with Closys for 1 minute. Do not swallow.
- Brush: Brush teeth gently for 2 minutes using Crest Cavity Protection toothpaste (she’s specific with this – it’s the original Crest paste). Spit out excess, but do not rinse with water.
- Rinse again: Use Listerine mouth rinse for 30-seconds to 1 minute. Again, do not swallow. Do not rinse with water between steps.
- Rinse a final time: Finish the routine by rinsing with ACT Anticavity Fluoride mouth rinse for 1 minute. Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes after this step.
In addition to this daily routine, Dr. Ellie recommends consuming 6-10 grams of xylitol, spaced throughout the day after meals or snacks. Xylitol helps loosen plaque, making it easier to rinse away, and balances the mouth’s acidity. I’ll explain more on this in a bit.
Some key tips for success with the system:
- Use the rinses for the full 1 minute each
- Do not substitute products – use the exact brands recommended
- Do not rinse with water between steps
- Use the system consistently every morning and night
- Incorporate xylitol daily for best results
The system has proven extremely effective, even for those with previously “incurable” periodontal disease. Surprised dentists have told patients they no longer need surgery after just a few months on Dr. Ellie’s program. The rinses and xylitol work to disable dangerous bacteria like P. gingivalis that can cause chronic infections and serious health problems.
Here’s how Xylitol works
According to Dr. Ellie’s Complete Mouth Care System, xylitol helps loosen plaque in two key ways when consumed in sufficient amounts daily (around 6-7 grams per day).
Xylitol stimulates saliva production when used after meals, snacks or drinks. This mineralized saliva helps limit acidic damage and promotes healing and strengthening of the teeth.
The plaque-causing bacteria (strep mutans) are unable to process xylitol properly. They go into a “futile cycle” which makes them less sticky. This allows the bacteria to be more easily brushed and rinsed off the teeth during daily cleaning.
Over a period of 6 months to 2 years of consistently using 6-10 grams of xylitol per day, along with the other steps in Dr. Ellie’s system, the plaque-causing bacteria can be reduced by up to 98%. This leads to significantly less plaque and tartar buildup in the mouth.
The xylitol works together with the precise use of the rinses and brushing to control plaque bacteria. It results in cleaner, healthier and stronger teeth over time.
To Floss Or Not To Floss?
Dr. Ellie Phillips does not recommend flossing as an effective method for preventing dental disease or cavities. Here are the key points regarding her stance on flossing:
- There is a lack of scientific evidence supporting flossing as a way to prevent cavities, even if done multiple times per day. Dr. Ellie believes we may look back in 50 years and question the concept of cleaning teeth with a piece of string.
- The Cochrane Database shows weak and unreliable evidence that flossing and brushing can reduce plaque in the short-term (1-3 months). However, no studies indicate the effectiveness of flossing and brushing in preventing cavities. source.
- Despite the common “brush and floss” advice from dentists, many compliant patients still end up with cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems. This suggests that brushing and flossing alone may be inadequate for protecting teeth.
- Instead of flossing, Dr. Ellie recommends her Complete Mouth Care System, which involves using specific oral care products in a precise sequence twice daily. This system is designed to eliminate plaque, resolve gingivitis, prevent cavities, and heal gum diseases.
- As part of her system, Dr. Ellie emphasizes the importance of using xylitol mints after meals to balance mouth chemistry and make plaque easier to rinse away. Five exposures to xylitol each day can reduce plaque as effectively as toothbrushing
My Recommendations
As a professional in the realm of your well-being, I suggest mouth care is so important. If, when, you’re traveling, it may not be so important to have the three mouth rinses, but a great thing to carry around is a toothbrush and use that in place of a floss. It’s not to brush your teeth but to use the bristles between your teeth to take off stuck food. If you’re ever at my Tantra Massage studio, I have the mouth rinses there ready for use! Good luck, and let me know how your mouth care goes!
